Minister of death reviews

Sometimes things at HT-HQ! get kinda stagnant, nothing that outstanding comes in for review, but when I saw the GSR package on the floor and opened it up and saw the new Setup CD, I knew that I wouldn’t be dissapointed. Belgium’s The Setup are one of my favourite bands, and I think probably GSR’s best…… my only gripe is that I havent got to see them live yet, as if the sound as good on CD then live must be some experience!

But I wasnt ready for this or expecting anything even close to what this is! This is way above and beyond what I expected, more hardcore, heavier, intenser, groovier, tighter, slicker, cleaner, everythinger!!! than their last CD “The Pretense of Normality” (also on GSR), which was one of my favourite albums of 2005, so this is one hell of a step up! In some parts Dries vocal style really reminds me of old school Karl Earth Crisis……which is a great thing! And with any true hardcore album, plenty of great backup and gang vocals. The music couldnt be any tighter, mixing in all styles of hardcore, intense, raw, metalcore. And just like “The Pretense of Normality” production duties were taken by Ace Zec, doing as good as and better a job this time around. There isnt a single song or even part of a song that will bore and not hold your attention. If you like hardcore then this is simply a CD you have to get…. theres so much bland, generic “hardcore” out there these days, releases like this are a rare thing, so check them out and get to a live show if you can!

We’re only 4 months into the year, but this is going to take some beating to get HT’s album of the year…….dont think Born from Pain will be relasing anything this year! Straight onto the mp3 player!

Hardcore riffing and gritty screams combined with a pummeling rhythm section and solid production, Listening to “Minster of Death” you can definitely hear the influence of Hatebreed and Helmet, also countrymen Emeth. This album is Heavy, raw and technically proficient, angry but not reckless, “Minister Of Death” is The Setup’s second full-length, following up “The Pretense Of Normality” from 2005, and sure to set a new standard in hardcore death metal.

Since the day of their inception Belgium’s THE SETUP belong to Europe’s most recognized acts. The band received through and through positive reactions on their debut album “The Pretense Of Normality” and I’ve no doubts the boiling intensity captured on their sophomore effort “Minister Of Death” will enthuse people even more.

Blending the unbridled energy of bands, such as THE HOPE CONSPIRACY, 108 and UNBROKEN the five-piece goes for a rough ride through 11 tracks that’ll beat the living shit out of you. Rooted in mid-tempo heaviness “Minister Of Death” still offers a good amount of variety, like various tempo-changes, subtle melodies and neck-breaking dance-parts. The latter often bring the pulverizing breakdowns of MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD to mind, so expect some truly hard-hitting moments once you push the start-button. THE SETUP’s man behind the mic doubtlessly belongs to the most outstanding vocalists around these days. With the lung-volume of several racehorses his screams crush through the speakers with sheer jaw-dropping force and give each song even more momentum. The stunning production makes songs like the racing “Kingmaker”, the groove-laden “Burial Ground” or the lightly melodic “Predators” even more menacing and belongs to the finest recordings I’ve heard recently. Maybe THE SETUP could vary even more in terms of tempos, but at least “Minister Of Death” is hell of a well written effort. Additionally, the concluding “Roses And Skulls” has “epic” written all over it and marks a final climax.

Over the years THE SETUP have created a brutal and dark sound all their own. Despite THE HOPE CONSPIRACY and MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD there’s no other band that plays modern hardcore with similar momentum.

This band is in the meantime a well-known phenomenon in the hardcore scene. Things already went fast for them thanks to their pretty unique style of music here in Belgium, but with their debut full-length, The Pretense Of Normality, they really got lifted here in Europe. So I’m pretty curious where this Minister Of Death is going to bring them.

Musically there hasn’t changed that much to be honest. And I can’t blame them, they have found the winning formula in their genre and why should they change it?

So expect their well-known outfading guitars with the high notes between it, heavy breakdowns, Cool build-ups who really explode (for example at the end of the song Cult Of Personality). In the last song (Rose And Skulls) they even chose a more different (read emo/melodic) approach, but it sounds real cool though it matches the lyrics perfectly! Most of the other lyrics are political tainted and handle up to date subjects (Sniper, Minister Of Death) and other ones are written very personal and rather dark (Kingmaker, Post Mortem Blues).
As you could also notice on their previous albums, things are pretty well thought, everything fits perfectly musically and even the artwork can be considered a part of their music. It’s done really cool and even looks a bit apocalyptic.

The production is, again, very tight! Everything sounds perfect so that is a big plus both for the band and the listener so you can hear every single detail in their songs.

The live performance from The Setup is also very good. Cool vibes in their songs, a lot of jumping and running around on stage and a good interaction with the crowd… so the perfect live band in my opinion.

Now enough talking, start the listening. If you are quick to buy a record you might be one of the lucky ones who gets a DVD with their copy.

While their debut could not totally convince me, the Setups new output may do so. Although nothing too groundbreaking, this tough metalcore record has some certain charme. First and foremost, their frontman brings one of the most aggressive performances of this weeks update. Total over the top screaming, rough and luckily uncheesy, just plain and pure screaming, fitting well into the music and already being one part of it’s charme. Speaking about the music itself, I always mentioned that although rather generic stuff is served here, this develops some energy. Think about Cataract for the metalpart as well as some tough guy band like Terror for the general tough approach of the Setup, and the basic mixture is already described. A good production, some well balanced songwriting, the abandonment of too cheesy tough guy moments, some nice although retained melodies here and there add their part to the mix. Listen to the title-track to get a feeling for this. A choir is maybe a bit too predictable, but works well on here most of the time. All that mixed with the relentless screaming from the vocalist, the whole record gets a kinda pissed, desperate feeling. Often, the rythms appear quite laid back, meaning midtempo, and through that massive and danceable, which is nothing bad. A tasty artwork and a quite cool production rounds this up – as said, nothing fresh or totally surprising, but a good tough metal record with some nice moments.

Donkere, onheilspellende metal/hardcore.

When The Setup released their debut EP “Nine Kinds Of Pain” I wasn’t really impressed. And I certainly did not expect much of their live shows. Boy was I wrong, this band sounded furious, energetic and was 110% motivated. Their debut full length “The Pretense Of Normality” reminded me more of their energetic live shows, although it might have lacked a bit of that rawness the live shows contained. If you’ve got such an intense and amazing show it’s immensely hard to capture that atmosphere on a disc, kinda like the problems Born From Pain faced the first couple of releases. With “Minister Of Death” The Setup managed to do just that.

From the first track “Post Mortem Blues” till the last “Roses And Skulls” this album sounds amazing. Intense, raw, brutal and dark are the keywords that come to mind. I don’t like to compare bands of this caliber to any other bands, but just for the people that never seen or heard of these guys think: The Hope Conspiracy, Vision Of Disorder, Most Precious Blood. But to be honest, I really think that The Setup beats the before mentioned bands in terms of intensity and brutality. Everything seems to have fallen into place.

The production is done by Ace Zec, who managed to keep the sound very raw and dark. Same goes for the artwork, with the emphasis on Art, Dennis Sibeijn(DamnEngine) did an amazing job and seemed to have just captured what this release is about. Although some tracks have a duration of over 4 minutes I don’t get bored one second. There’s so much variation in these songs and they all seem to have that burst of energy. Take “Winter” for example, this track sounds amazingly intense and sounds like a huge amount of bottled up aggression just waiting to be released. I definitely know that this new release will bring The Setup to the next level.

I always thought there weren’t any bands that could amaze me like BFP did over the years, but The Setup is definitely able to compete with these guys. I can continue to tell you how amazing this release and band just is, but I guess there’s just one way to convince you for sure and that’s to experience it yourself. Go to one of their shows, check their myspace or just buy the damn album.

The Setup haben bereits mit „The Pretense Of Normality” ein sehr gutes Hardcore Album abgeliefert.

Übrigens: Ab März sind The Setup zusammen mit Born From Pain, First Blood und Bloodlined Calligrahy unterwegs.

Minister of Death eindigt met het nummer: Roses and Skulls (make a great match).
