Nine kinds of pain reviews

I picked this record up, looked at the artwork, and instantly thought of the Suicide File. However, musically, it is not like the Suicide File at all. This record has totally surprised me, like totally. The energy and attitude are something else, it is pissed off slightly metallic hardcore with great desperate, shredding vocals and it just explodes out of the speakers. The first song comes in all guns blazing with some ace samples of people screaming on about Enron, which makes a nice change from trite unity crap or self conscious wackiness. From then on the record maintains it’s quality through out its 4 songs, never feeling the need to justify it’s musicality by throwing in a melodic bit or a twinkly mid section or something and there is little trace of ‘formula’. This would be awesome live and I can’t wait for a full length. Thank you Malcolmgator!

The Set Up’s “Nine Kinds of Pain” starts out slow and sludgy and steadily builds in speed and aggression. At times it reminds me of Cave In but not all the time. It’s a bit slow for my tastes. They blend sludgy riffs with dark melodies creating a unique blend of hardcore as well as metal.

K prirovnání stací udat The Hope Conspiracy, protože ta podobnost je tady vskutku preveliká, ale myslím i když nekdo muže nesohlasit The Setup mají hodne navrch a me teda dostali, což Hope Conspiracy se nikdy nepodarilo.
A ješte jedna technická, neplést si s kolegy The Set Up!

Holy shit… this Belgian act opens it up sort of calm and quiet, but you can tell something’s about to blow up, and then a sample comes in against some brutal chord progressions and distant screaming, ebbing and flowing in volume and intensity, and after this instrumental (“Mirror Images”) things get a bit more frantic and involved with “Wireless”, as the screaming vocals come to the fore with more rhythmic attacks and a better sense of melody and variety. This is basically creative metallic hardcore with more metal than straight hardcore, but it comes off as very balanced, it’s strange because it doesn’t sound metal per se, you can just hear a lot of those influences at work. They make excellent use of dissonant chords/note combinations, the writing is powerful, and this is great stuff. “A Man of Honour” is a little more simplistic with an almost rocked out lean to some of its rhythms, but the title track picks up the pace a little more and gets back into the twisted sort of discordant hardcore riffs and constant fluctuations. In a way this kind of sounds like Burst if they were more towards hardcore as opposed to the dirge-y sort of bleak stuff, as these guys cover those bases but definitely still come off as a hardcore band. There’s a little bit of everything here. The recording comes off as a little thin with a definite sheen of treble hovering over the instrumentation, which is a shame, but it still works because the bass tone is great and as a whole the tones are strong. It if it was a little cleaner and more controlled in the mix it would absolutely crush. The layout is awesome, though. Everything is printed in shades of brown with cool high contrast designs and organized text, and quality little band photos. The record comes on opaque maroon vinyl and has messages in the center dealing with “melons” and “boobies” – perhaps a joke best kept between friends, because that style of humor is not in line with their music/lyrics in the least. The lyrics are bleak and seem to be personal, but are sort of posed in a way that leaves that open. “I see the upside there’s nothing left to me. To choose denial consumed by all our fear. Separation, the marks, the death of me it’s all so fucking hysterical for the kill.” Good work. I damn sure want to hear more from this band, because this is a fiery EP, and they could do some major damage. Check it out.

Zu erwähnen ebenfalls diverse Shows mit RAG MEN, DRI, ALL OUT WAR und INTEGRITY. Musikalisch geprägt wurde man vom klassischen New Age-Rooster. The Setup bieten in Zeiten von Klischees etwas gänlich Unverfälschtes. Genau so.

As it often happens with 7”s they remain on the shelf too long before getting reviewed. I’m just too lazy. And this new Belgian band is just too good to receive that treatment. Three members of the former old school powerhouse Thumbs Down, formed the Setup together with a bass player coming from the Flanders underground band called Nilgai. As for a singer, they chose one of the best hardcore singers in the country; Dries from Circle. He sometimes screams like the end of the world is approaching in Circle songs, but with the Setup he’s going for the end of the universe. Great grooving and extremely intense and aggressive hardcore, going from a bit old school towards, tons “not-so-metal-new-school”. Just four songs… pity. Oh well, turn over this pink master piece and start dancing again.

The Setup – Nine Kinds of Pain MCD (Eyespy Records)

It’s the cd version of the 7” reviewed earlier on. This cd is just as awesome and even has an extra track on it (called: “No Promise”). Still if you like the band you’re not off the hook that easily as the layout is totally different and just as cool. If you want to impress your friends with your record collection you have to have both. Superb release.www.voiceofreason.de

The Setup is another band from Belgium that releases their debut 7″ on AM Records and like the other bands on that label The Setup also come up with a cool release. Unlike their label mates In Arm’s Reach, The First Step, Break It Up or Righteous Jams The Setup are not so much into old school Hardcore 100% but mix traditional Hardcore with a more modern Hardcore sound in the vein of bands like The Suicide File and The Hope Conspiracy. They started when Thumbs Down called it quits and added Dries from Belgium’s Circle on vocals to the group. “Nine kinds of pain” is a very good start for this band and another proof that AM Records puts out one quality release after the other. And if that wasn’t enough, the 7″ comes with a separate lyrics sheet and pink vinyl.

When it became clear that Thumbs Down, one of Belgium’s coolest bands, was about to die, guitarists Raf and Andries decided to start something new right away with drummer Benjamin. Their good friend Christophe (ex-Nilghai) played bass and they started to write songs, but they still hadn’t found a singer. Luckily Dries from Circle was prepared to cover the vocal duties and The Setup was complete. But don’t expect any music that sounds like Thumbs Down or Circle, because The Setup is quite a bit more focused on the darker side of life. The lyrics are pretty cryptic, but it’s clear that they are meant to express negative and depressing emotions. The music that The Setup plays fits those lyrics well and can be described as a combination of The Hope Conspiracy and the dark atmosphere of Ringworm (although there aren’t any real similarities to this band when you solely look at the music). A surprising style, when you consider the background of the musicians, but they managed to create some good music. Although there are some recognisable influences, it sounds very original. So once again you see that when one band splits, other good things grow out of it!

Life Is War (encore eux !)…

out of step zine

When Thumbs Down broke up, long-time members Raf, Andries and Benjamin decided they were going to do something new right away. The Setup was born and they got the line up together by adding Christophe (ex-Nilghai) and Dries (Circle). The Setup has just brought out their first MCD ‘ nine kinds of pain’ and it blows a fresh wind into the hardcore scene. Music wise they combine fast old school hardcore with more midtempo rocking hardcore to a sound of their own. Dries is screaming his lungs out, don’t expect any singing like he does with circle. This MCD contains 5 songs: the intro ‘mirror image’, ‘wireless’, ‘a man of honour’, nine kinds of pain’ and ‘no promise’. Don’t expect a new Thumbs down or a second Circle because there is only one ‘The Setup’ and it kills. They got me up and moshing, a great warm up for the upcomming full length. Check it out, very refreshing and very promising.

Is this 7″ real spooky, or am I playing it at the wrong speed. Holy crap 33 RPM sounds awesome. it still sounds good at 45 RPM. Ok, my 33 RPM endeavor made me wish this band was going to be on the Integrity tip, but upon speeding it up, I get semi light hearted Buried Alive. It sounds like the fusion of Champion and The Hope Conspiracy. Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. Hard, but not Terror like. And core, but not typical youth crew stylee (not that Champion sounds that way). Feel free to reference Panic or American Nightmare too. Don’t reference Gorilla Biscuits or Youth of Today.
Plus this came on dope pink/magenta vinyl. I’m psyched. Go ahead, and pick up these 3 songs.

No Pain, no gain. Maar The Setup delivers!
